Welcome back to Knees Calhoon's Midnight Ramble. Every night around the witching hour you can expect another remixed song from the Knees Calhoon Jookbox. Collect 'em all!
Ironically, even though this was just his second song, it's probably the most solid rock & roll song he ever wrote.
As always, click on the song title to hear the tune.
Written: Huntzinger’s Apartments, Farmington NM, summer 1965
This is Knees’ second song with lyrics and he obviously didn’t spend too much time on them. The song was inspired by a surfin’ tune called California Sun and the guitar lick is a ripoff of Del Shannon’s organ solo on Runaway. A critic once described the “lie there and moan” line as “so political incorrect that it has to make you smile.” In 1965 it was the best most young stud wannabees could hope for.
I’m goin back where I belong
Where the summer days
are twice as long
An the girls I love,
love me too.
So keep away don’t make
me stay
You had your chance you
had your way
An now it’s time for me
to go.
I’m goin back to the
girls back home
They don’t gimme no lip
They just lie there an
moan.
The life back home is
for a man
Who doesn’t want a Mojo
hand
You never gave me the
love that I need.
So keep away don’t make
me stay
You had your chance you
had your way
An now it’s time for me
to go.
